Intercultural Summer Camp

Kamishibai Storytelling

In July 2017 I worked as an Artist Facilitator for Tallaght Community Arts on a participatory arts project exploring stories using visual arts design, spoken and written work in English and mother tongue.

The project was with 5 mothers and 9 children from different cultural backgrounds connected with Intercultural Drop in Centre Tallaght participated.

I worked with theatre director Jennifer Webster.  We used Kamishibai art form.

Kamishibai is a popular performance arts from dating from the early 20 century. It utilises large wooden slide boxes that enable participants to explore language and create, make and perform visual and spoken short stories for sharing with others.

Kamishibai is often used as a reputable arts education and language tool for developing written and spoken language and design confidence.

The 5 day project in July 2017 explored stories that the participants brought and shared. Mothers and children developed the images using paper collage slides for the Kamishibai boxes and evolved texts for their stories.

The project culminated in a sharing of work by the group with the wider Intercultural Drop in Centre Community in Tallaght.
